ALEX & ALI
Malachi Leopold
(US/Turkey, 2014, 85 min)
Alex was a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran in the 1970s. There he fell in
love with Ali, an Iranian. Though they loved each other deeply, Alex was forced
to flee Iran during the first rumblings of the Islamic Revolution in 1978.
After being separated for 35 years and corresponding only by letter and email,
the two men finally reunite in Turkey, where Ali reveals that he wants to gain
asylum and leave Iran forever, and the two men must grapple with the current
oppressive regime and examine whether their longstanding feelings have stood
the test of time.
