QUEENS AND COWBOYS
QUEENS & COWBOYS:
A STRAIGHT YEAR ON THE GAY RODEO
Matt Livadary (US,
2014, 92 min)
QUEENS & COWBOYS chronicles a complete season of
the International Gay Rodeo Association. Unbeknownst to many, the IGRA has been
providing an arena for competition for LGBT cowboys and cowgirls for three
decades. Director Matt Livadary spent an entire year shooting hundreds of hours
of footage, following fascinating cowboy Wade Earp (a descendant of Wyatt Earp)
and Char Duran, a female bull rider, among other impassioned protagonists who
live for the rodeo circuit. QUEENS & COWBOYS also delves into issues of
discrimination against openly gay cowboys in the straight rodeo, the IGRA’s
heartening policy of making competitions gender-inclusive, and how the larger
rodeo community views the IGRA and homosexuality.
